What is Color Alchemy?
From color inspiration to application
Color Alchemy begins with digital images as your color inspiration, you’ll learn how to curate color palettes, create dye formulas and dye application methods for your custom projects.
Color Alchemy: from digital to dye
My newest book, ‘Color Alchemy: from digital to dye’ is exclusively available to course participants. It is the blueprint for my color matching and dyeing methods and serves as the textbook for the course.
This short animation shows how an image of outer space becomes a digital color palette, which then inspires dyed yarn and a finished garment. It’s a glimpse into my Color Alchemy process, where color inspiration becomes something tangible and wearable.
Why I created Color Alchemy
In 2006, I started dyeing fiber and quickly ran into a problem. At first, I assumed it would be easy to get the colors I imagined onto the fiber. I had a vision for the colors I wanted, but I could not get them to show up on the fiber the way I imagined. As a result, trial and error left me frustrated and wasting materials, time, and money.
Because of that, I began documenting what worked and experimenting with digital color tools. I am a fiber artist at heart, but I also love tech and finding smarter, more efficient ways to work. Over time, these early experiments led to the dye guide “Dyeing To Get The Colors You Want”, where I explored how to turn images into palettes like the Twilight Sunset mitts below. For example, I used photos to pull palettes and then tested them until they behaved on fiber the way I intended.
Going deeper into the science
However, I was not done. In fact, the more I learned, the more I realized how many dyers were struggling with the exact same problems. I wanted to go deeper into the science behind color and create a complete system for dyeing with intention. In addition, I wanted something that could help spinners, dyers, and fiber artists understand digital color and how to translate that into real, repeatable results on yarn and fiber. Ultimately, my goal was to take the stress out of color so you could focus on creating.
Introducing the Color Alchemy Masterclass
In short, that is how the Color Alchemy Masterclass was born. Today, the system you learn in this course is the same one I rely on in my own dye studio. As a result of taking the course, you will spend less time guessing and more time creating what you actually want.
Dyeing To Get The Colors You Want guide
The earliest prototypes of my proprietary method for matching dyes to digital colors became the foundation for my first guide, Dyeing To Get The Colors You Want.
Discover the secrets behind perfect color matching
These gloves were my very first proof of concept. For twenty years I have refined my one of a kind color matching method. After cracking the secret to turning photos into dye recipes I created this course to share every tip with you. Now you can achieve professional results like this with confidence too.
What You’ll Learn
The Color Alchemy process is straightforward. First, we’ll start by breaking down how to curate a palette from a photo. Next, we’ll convert the palette into dye formulas. Then, we’ll calibrate your dyes to match your target colors. Finally, we’ll organize your dye recipes so you can reuse them with confidence. Because of this, each module builds on the one before it so you build confidence step by step.

Carol Remington –
This class was so comprehensive, from understanding color theory, to using digital technology, and for record keeping. The technology was a steep learning curve for me but absolutely worth the significant brain power that it required. I understand how to refine a color, using my water and my fiber, as well as how to troubleshoot and understanding the limitations that dyeing fiber inherently has. I understand what the chemicals to assist the dyes do and how they work in my water. I could not recommend this course highly enough, but expect to work. It is not a 1,2,3 formula. Alanna presents a LOT of information and her years of experience to her students. I rate the class a 10 out of 10!!
Trace Stewart –
I was truly blown away by the sheer amount of information Alanna gave us. I went from not ever having dyed wool to picking a color I loved, creating a dye formula, and re-creating the color to successfully dye my yarn. She’s a patient and willing instructor.
Dana Bakke –
Thank you Alanna for all your help and hard work. It was a pleasure to take your class.
Rosanna Lovecchio –
Overall I loved this course! It really did help hone not only my dyeing skills but also my ability to look at a color in a different way. I liked the topics that were presented and thought they were presented in the appropriate order as well as in a clear manner. Alanna’s expertise is amazingly evident. Alanna has a way of putting things that make it easy to understand the course material and provide many relevant examples. I like how she tried to offer different ways of looking at colors. The spreadsheets do help to keep things organized. I did use them to adapt to my own spreadsheets. The course kits are an added cherry on top.
Pam Ellenberger –
This course will expand your understanding of color and how it relates to creating fibers/yarn to produce a successful project.
Ruth Stoneman –
This course was an amazing adventure for me to improve my confidence in my dyeing journey. Alanna gives so much individual attention that as long as you’re taking the class to expand your dyeing skills in any way, I don’t see how you wouldn’t get something out of her course. On my adventure, I learned about many free technology supports to help me identify colors and combinations that create amazing pallets. I also learned about color mixing in a whole new light.
Debbie Apple –
If you are the kind of person who sees a color, whether in nature or in a photo, and have the burning desire to reproduce that color in your dyeing, this course is what you need. I learned procedures through this course that I am certain I would not have learned anywhere else, and I certainly would not have figured them out on my own. Alanna has been working though this process for over a decade and I am so thankful she’s sharing it with us. She is 100% invested in your success. The support you receive will guarantee success.
Tamara Zuckerman –
This workshop was a foot-first adventure for me. Going from a toe-in-the-water experienced dyer to creating reproducible unique palates feels very empowering. This class is loaded with tiny bits of content and tech (not so tiny), which has a wide variety of applications for anyone in the fiber industry. At the same time, her methodology is most easily explained as the process of scientific alchemy of acid dyes on protein fibers. Alanna is a very intuitive teacher reaching each student on their own level. She did her best to reply to questions by day and even at night.
Jenna Bagley –
Fantastic content that is well presented. So much information! Impressive results.
Ben Scogings –
This is one of the best courses for learning how to dye fabrics especially if you want to learn how to colour match to a hex code (colour on a computer). These techniques open the door to planing a dyeing project on a computer to form a plan then with confidence make that concept real.
Desiree Scarlata –
5/5 stars! Excellent course for those who want to delve into technology to assist you to hone in on dyeing specific colors you want to create as quickly as possible (after completing the class work, which is not for the faint at heart, but so worth it!). I would recommend taking the course during a session that is not already busy for you in your other life, so you can fully enjoy and embrace the journey 🙂 The course is jammed packed with resources and content related to color theory, managing projects, documenting your process, and so much more. Alanna was extremely supportive and committed to helping us all along the journey.
Cher Roosenhoff –
I love the course. The video’s are clear and rewatchable. so you can watch at your own pace. Alanna explains so many things about anything I did not know I wanted to know. Love Alanna’s presence and enthousiasm to explain things. I need that to understand new things.
Sue Schreuder –
I loved the course. So much helpful information in so many areas such as organisation and planning as well as tools and processes to get to the color you want. Alanna goes out of her way to help us individually where required.
Suzi Gough –
I really enjoyed the course and learned a lot! Alanna is a wonderful, patient, and knowledgeable instructor. It more than met my expectations!
Loesje Hermans –
This course is amazing, the system you developed is mind blowing! My understanding of color grew so much that I will never feel frustrated again when dyeing a specific color. I now feel confident I will be able to dye every color I want just the way I like it to be. YES!! Apart from the whole color theory part and the incredible system you developed, I loved the whole organisational part and all other creative inspiration you gave.
Cynthia de Steuben –
The course provides a good foundation of color theory, curating a color palette for a project and fundamentals in dying those colors. The tools I learned will be valuable in my indie dye business.
Holly Cameron –
this course challenged me in many ways. I have learned a lot about how digital colour works, and how to get the colour you want from that digital photo into dye. I appreciate Alanna’s knowledge on the subjects, and am looking forward to putting what I have learned into practice!
Kirsten Kennedy –
Alanna’s course is a comprehensive guide to dyeing that took me on a journey I’ll never forget. The course taught me so much more than I imagined. From training my eye to see colors all the way to the dyepot, Color Alchemy has provided all the tools for my future projects.
Amber Keyes –
Alanna, the vast amount of information and education that you provide is worth every penny! I can’t express enough how much I appreciate all the sweat and tears that you have put into this course. I found this course at the right time. As someone who has learned to dye yarn by reading books and watching some YouTube videos. You have helped me feel more confident in my dyeing skills because you don’t just teach how to match colors. Your course teaches students to truly understand color, how to organize themselves so they will be able to recreate colors years later, and how to color match. If I’m being honest, you kind of become a mentor and bring other like-minded individuals together. You are building a community that I’m proud to say I get to be apart of.
Jon Chowning –
The course is well documented and very thorough. It covers a lot of aspects of dyeing that I had not considered before taking the course. It’s a lot of work dyeing all those skeins, but there is a purpose to each and every one. In the end, it is amazing how easy it is to get to the dye formula using your own fiber and dyes for the colors you want.
Lee Steuber –
I learned a lot about color, tech tools to help zero in on the right palettes and recipes, and methods for consistently dyeing in ways that can be replicated. Alanna is very knowledgeable, enjoys sharing her information, and is very responsive and helpful.
Teresa Clark –
When I first began dyeing, it seems like nothing ever came out the way I had envisioned it. No matter, what I tried, it was always disappointing. I have a personality of one who is a perfectionist and failure doesn’t come easy for me. However, until I took this class, it became more common and I was ready to give up, and started to think maybe I just wasn’t cut out for this. Alanna’s class completely turned that around and now when I plan a color and dye for it, it’s the results that I wanted in the first place. It may take me a few 10 g hanks to tweak the colors but by the time I’m ready to dive in and start dyeing for a project, I know I’ll get what I had in my mind and laid out in my project. The class boosted my confidence a 100 times over. I’m so excited to plan the next set of colors or projects because a whole new world of dyeing has been opened up to me because of this course, the outstanding and never ending support from Alanna, and the tools she has provided that ensures my success. It’s an amazing course, Alanna teaches in a way that sometimes you don’t even know your learning but by the end, you think awww that’s why she had me do it this way. It all falls beautifully into place.
Normandy Alden –
I’ve been gushing to my friends about how interesting the course it, how great it is to get closer to my dye goals in a quicker amount of time, how going really in-depth with color theory has expanded my perspective/understanding in other parts of my life, how the technical aspect is no joke.
Marie-josee Lafleur –
It’s a lot of information, so plan on 15-20 hours a week to fully appreciate it. It’s worth it!
Tricia Valenta –
This class is well worth the time and money. Alanna is always available to students throughout the length of the course and she created extra tutorials if we were having trouble with anything.
Sarah Florent –
The course gave me a new way to look at color, and I feel a more creative way to approach dyeing while still keeping track of what I am doing.
Ericka Weniger –
The course is intense, but it’s worth it. I would recommend this course to a dyer who knows how to dye and really wants to do custom color work, or someone who is more art minded and wanted to use the dyes at tools and mediums to accomplish a certain look.
Debbie Hoover –
I have recommended to my dyer friends to take the course!
